We are looking for a Marine Biologist and Sustainability Manager to join our winning team.
Requirements:

- Delivering resort-wide environmental awareness programme:
- Guest experiences
- Managing the Marine Biology Centre, ensuring displays are educational and up to date.
- Guiding eco-friendly guest snorkeling trips in the house reef or by boat as required.
- Ensure eco briefings are conducted before any marine activities to prescribed standard.
- Conduct night snorkeling activities for guests.
- Accompany guests on SCUBA dives, as required.
- Guide resort eco-tours as required.
- Deliver regular engaging presentations about the nature of Maldives.
- Constantly develop and improve innovative environmental experiences and displays for guests.
- Be available for guests in key resort locations and during the General Manager Cocktail Party.
- Ensure reef and beach clean ups as well as internationally celebrated eco-events are organised at the resort and neighbouring islands.
- Host awareness
- Create & provide conservation and sustainability training to hosts and local islanders (e.g. school children, teachers, fishermen, etc.).
- Prepare environment and sustainability related information material for the host notice board and contribute to host and HPL Hotels & Resorts newsletters.
- Provide SEAS activities for the hosts each month (reef clean, movie night, snorkeling trip etc.).
- Information Sharing and Marketing
- Run the resorts Marine Biology blog at https://gili-lankanfushi.com/discover/gili-veshi-marine-biology-shack/marine-biology-blog/
- Contribute to all promotional and educational material concerned with natural features of the resort (flora, fauna, marine life information for newsletters, posters, videos, eco-book, presentations, websites etc.)
- Ensuring the Coral Lines Project blog (https://gili-lankanfushi.com/discover/gili-veshi-marine-biology-shack/coral-lines-blog/) is up to date, and ensuring all information is shared open access and on time.
- Provide Sales and Marketing team with initiatives and information sharing with EarthCheck for marketing purposes.
- Provide information to HPL Hotels & Resorts in updating the project fact sheet on the web site, preparing press releases, etc.
- Conservation, Research & Environmental Monitoring:
- Overseeing and participating in monitoring and maintenance of the in-house coral research project “Coral Lines”. This includes guest experience, underwater maintenance, monitoring, database management, data analysis, and monthly publishing of the results on the Coral Lines blog.
- Ensuring conservation of flora and fauna of the Lankanfushi Island and the surrounding reef by delivering awareness programme (as above) and proactively consulting resorts management.
- Beach monitoring through monthly measurements at benchmark positions
- Ensuring that all injured/stressed marine and terrestrial organisms are looked after and that animal welfare issues are addressed.
- Engage, contribute, drive and develop research and conservation programs that are relevant to the North Male Atoll and Maldives (Inclusive of the National Coral Reef Monitoring Program, Manta Trust and Olive Ridley Project).
- Coordinate scientific surveys and ensure consistent scientific data collection for national and international conservation projects as required, including but not limited to coral bleaching surveys, and Olive Ridley Project net protocol.
- Coral Reef monitoring and active management, including the use of permanent transects, CPC’e software, temperature loggers, and Crown of Thorns population monitoring and culling.
- Liaise with and assist other Resort Marine Biology teams as necessary.
- Monitor for and consult on any intermittent environmental issues.
- Attend conservation related stakeholder consultations, symposiums and workshops on the national level and represent Gili Lankanfushi in the conservation community.
- Sustainability:
- Coordinate the EarthCheck Program for the Resort.
- Organise monthly benchmarking data collection for key environmental indicators and input into Earth Check software
- Create and maintain the resorts SEAS Policy and Environmental Monitoring System (inclusive of Action Plans and Risk Assessments) in line with Earth Check standards.
- Ensure all Resort Policies and Procedures are in line with EarthCheck standards.
- Drive the Resorts Green Team, and work together in order to meet Earth Check standards.
- To conduct and coordinate audits to ensure the Resort is complying with the Environmental Monitoring System and EarthCheck standards.
- Record, maintain and monitor key sustainability indicators (as per Earth Check) and present information to the Director of Human Resources and Training and Resort Manager via Earth Check software.
- Work to maintain and improve upon the Resorts current EarthCheck status by working through the EarthCheck program.
- Supervise, audit and ensure that all personnel in the resort comply with eco-friendly practices.
- Bring up-do-date information on environmental legislation at local and international level, and update concerned hosts on the developments.
- Continuously research and propose new sustainable technology solutions to resort where applicable.
- Liaise with management and 3rd party companies in order to implement and develop sustainable initiatives.
- Identify the environmental challenges and trends of the local community, and help tackle them by recommending solutions.
- Other Tasks:
- Manage and train one full time assistant and supervise up to 2 interns as needed.
- Organise, develop and schedule tasks and training for all hosts within the Marine Biology department.
- Ensure that all required reports and schedules are completed and up to the required standard.
- Manage the Marine Biology Centre’s displays, activities, equipment, and budgets.
- Actively support and have good comprehension of the Resorts Mission, Vision and Core Values.
- Attend meetings and training as required by direct manager.
- Able to work with minimum supervision, maintain composure under pressure and be responsive to changing circumstances.
- Budget and plan annual environmental activities to be carried out at resort level, in consultation with Director of Human Resources and Training and Resort Manager.
- Prepare and submit environmental activities report on a monthly basis. Prepare and present the environmental activities report to all Department Heads on a quarterly basis.
- Prepare required SOP’s and P&P’s and ensure resort teams follow the set procedures.
- Liaise, and maintain good public relations with different social and environmental organizations in the Maldives and abroad, and be an ambassador of all aspects of environmental activities.
- Work closely with local government authorities and research opportunities for involvement.
- Perform any special duties or projects as assigned by management from time to time.
